The Books
Intent

Most inner exploration instruction on self-realization and enlightenment systems is buried under layers of obscure, esoteric dogma and relies on mystical terminology that confuses as much as it entices. Most personal development and self-help tools out there are made of nothing but boasting and bloat.
Conscious Development of the Personality
The subjects of yoga, awakening, healing, enlightenment, and empowerment appear to be unrelated, but as you will learn in these series, they all constitute parts of a whole: conscious development of the personality. If you understand these different parts, they will clearly show you the path to tread to self-realization, profound happiness, and a permanently rooted sense of power and capability.
There is nothing harder to find in the world than clarity. Every situation, circumstance, or event can be seen in any number of possible ways, and so with every situation, circumstance, or event that occurs, the confusion that this brings increases.
We are asked in every moment what we want to make of it. How we want to perceive it. Whether to accept what is, or to deny it and fight against it.
Some things are within our power, while others are not. Within our power are opinion, motivation, desire, aversion, and, in a word, whatever is of our own doing; not within our power are our body, our property, reputation, office, and, in a word, whatever is not of our own doing.
-Epictetus, Enchiridion 1
Freedom through self-mastery. Liberation through self-awareness.
While many of us believe that increased action and control measures such as procedural strategies placed upon other people and then enforced through legislative and administrative instruments are the best way to control the chaos of the outside world in order to find some manner of personal happiness, worth, and security, I believe that through letting go of all fear-based beliefs and trusting instead in one’s self in the moment to penetrate through the distortions of our assumptions and prejudgments, the right actions to take in every moment, the right words to say to truly connect, the right appreciation of what is being offered by the other person, whoever they are, are quite naturally revealed, through the inherent pristine clarity of vision and discerning wisdom that is innate within each individual, no matter their upbringing, no matter their innate, conditioned intelligence.
Any individual, any group or collective, all want a few of the same things: the clarity to know what they want, the means by which it can be achieved, and the confidence in taking steps to ensure they will arrive somewhere close to their goal. When everything goes well and we get what we want, we let ourselves be happy, and even to feel like we’ve done something worthwhile.
If you are pained by any external thing, it is not this thing that disturbs you, but your own judgment about it. And it is in your power to wipe out this judgment now.
- Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
The problem with all of this is that circumstances can never and will never make someone feel a certain way; only the way we view those circumstances. People are conditioned to feel as though they are the victims of a never-ending sequence of hostile events completely outside of their control that happen to them, each of which might mean danger or harm in some way. And so, walk around afraid of change, certain that if any change happens, it will lead only to further separation and eventually death. This is a belief about the way the world works, and this informs one’s direct experience: how you feel about a situation depends on your beliefs about that situation. In other words, the way you view life, the points of view you adopt while you live, which is always 100% within your control, determines the life you live; whether it is a loving, grateful one, filled with passionate dedication and wholehearted devotion, or one of sorry and loss and distracting anxieties that have you flit from one thing to another, ever dissatisfied, it is all based on the points of view that you adopt on each situation in the moment.
The chronically ill media, governmental systems, education systems, and the very ways in which we interact and connect with people are all symptoms of the warped perceptions we hold as a collective. After all, humanity can only ask for what they already know. We ask for the familiar, for the known, and yet, we are driven to grow, which means stepping forward into the unknown.
Passion, love, worth, power, joy, flow, and to learn, these things that make life truly worth living, these come not from things outside one’s self, but from within.
There is no universal series of steps that can be applied to each unique question or case. The world is forever changing. There are, however, certain principles that are more fundamental and therefore can be relied upon more. The Horizontal Path offers these fundamental principles in a manner that can be readily practiced in a variety of contexts to allow the practitioner to understand for themselves, in their own language, what is right in each situation.
To set a star on the horizon, to reach higher, to be drawn forward by a surging pull deep in one’s heart, this can be realized. To get over our nonsense, to connect, we have to be willing to let go of our assumptions and dislodge our sense of identity and self-worth from the conditioned belief systems that shape and dictate reality for the majority.
The Horizontal Path is a set of tools and perspectives that together form the foundations of what has been called in yogic circle a practice. The Horizontal Path is a highly efficient means of streamlining your perception through fundamental principles based on timeless truths that can be tailored by the individual to eliminate and transcend suffering step-by-step, and to enable you to move forward into a world brighter for your presence.
